it's my job - i do it well

I was asked if I worked the other day, oh yes, my title is MEAN MOM, that is also a great description of the work I do. I think of ways day in and day out to torture my children. Let me give you examples:

1- I make them go to bed by 9:30 every weekday night. Nobody else in the world goes to bed that early!

2- Then they must arise for scripture study at 5:20am, again, nobody else on the planet has to do this! (fortunately this task goes to Bill!)

3- They have to make meals (from scratch) and clean up after them.

4- They have daily jobs that they have to do before they can play, or even do their homework.

5- I expect good grades (even though every teacher is 'stupid' and the tests are over topics not even remotely brought up during class).

6- I have to meet any and all friends before an outing.

7- Absolutely no dates before 16years and then it's all in groups.

8- They can't go do anything if their rooms are not clean on Saturday (the rest of the week I just close doors.)

9- I made Tawny stick with flute and Harrison stick with violin (this may be why the twins have not wanted to play an instrument).

10- They don't have cable or dish, just a few lousy channels that are fuzzy (but the Internet supplies many of their favs...probably too many)

I could probably go on, but I think you may already be disgusted with me!

I fall into the mean mom category. I make my 2 year old pick up his toys before dinner, and if he can't get it done by dinner time then he doesn't get to eat. Yes, I will put him to bed without dinner. Yes, I make him clean up after himself and yes, I expect him to do so when I say. I'm okay with being a mean mom. It's exhausting, and more so later I'm sure, but I'm hoping my efforts will pay off and I'll have thoughtful, talented and well rounded kids like yours.

I don't know that I could ever get my boys up at 5:20 (or myself, for that matter), but I agree that a routine the family depends on is so valuable. It's funny, because my younger son uses the excuse "I can't play because we're cleaning the house," when he doesn't want to play with a certain friend. And the kids buy it, because they know we clean as a family.

Cool post--thanks!
