5K

Competitive 5 K walks are not common in Muncie Indiana, in fact this is the first one I've seen. This morning was the Soles to Souls 1st annual 10 K run, 5K run/walk. I was a little concerned when the walkers lined up for their start and nobody discussed the rules for a walking race. 30 seconds before we were supposed to start I asked if someone wanted to go over them real quick. There were a couple beside me who had no clue they couldn't run, so I'm glad I said something!
It had been over 5 years since I last competed in a 5K race walk. I had pushed it pretty hard this week making sure I could keep the pace fro the entire distance, then did a killer glute and leg workout Thursday, followed by my first spin class on Friday - I know...smart! I could hardly sit, and then I could hardly stand. I do things like that Once 'Go' was said all that was forgotten and I remembered why I love race walking so much!
Lots of things I had forgotten in the last five years came back to me. Like, "What if I'm off course? I haven't seen any markers or people for awhile!" But mostly I just enjoyed the power of race walking and the feeling like I can go on forever! It also made me miss Gloria and Shelly - my walking buddies from days past! We were so committed one year that not a foot of fresh snow could stop us from hitting the lake! I really miss them! They still walk without me in Colorado, I hope I can get a walk in with them when I'm going through to take David to the MTC!
Now back to the race -I passed one of the 5k runners (she wasn't running anymore at the time) then another, but this one kept letting me pass then ran back ahead, it gave me a good goal. When we came to about 20 yards of the finish line I was gaining on her. I clapped my hands and said she should not let a walker pass her, and kind of cheered her on from behind. (Those who knew me 'when' will know that I have changed, it used to be that I would make sure I passes anyone in my way!) The timers got my time down at 45:30, but they failed to subtract the 5 minutes and 10 seconds that had already been on the clock when we started! So I did it in a little over 40:00. I have done faster, I think my record is 35:00, but I'm very happy with that time for today! That's a 13 minute mile. What's more is than I really could have gone on, I have so much energy! I ended up getting a prize (1st place over all winner for the walkers) that's a $50.00 gift cert for The Running Company and a medal. Some church friends were there and both earned 1st place for their categories, we looked pretty special:-)
Now for other news:
Tawny was accepted into IU (into some sort of pre-med/biology program). Wow, it's hard to believe she's leaving so soon!
David finally finished his paper work for his mission. He has his interviews left to do, then they go on to Utah. We'll probably know before the beginning of November where he's headed.
Everyone else is doing great!
