beauty in a bottle

Last night I went with the twins to a young women make up session done by a very nice Mary Kay specialist. I had a very hard time.
It should have been an enjoyable evening watching my girls wash their faces and put on foundation, blush, gloss, and eye base - that was pretty much the extent of the make over.
I should have sat there quietly and smiled as she went through the importance of good moisturizers instead of asking about petroleum products in her moisturizers.
I probably shouldn't have mentioned that mascara is made from bat poop.
And I probably shouldn't have encouraged the girls to experiment with makeup in their youth because when they are older their time for outlandish and fun things is pretty much over.
I did -on the other hand- NOT mention that sunblock is actually bad for them to apply, especially as liberally as she was suggesting. I didn't tell her how it also blocks Vit D from entering into the body, I didn't say that slathering all those chemicals over the largest and most porous organ (skin) may be what's causing many of the skin ailments and cancers today.
I didn't mention that the petroleum and mineral oils actually stop the skin from producing it's own moisturizers naturally and soon the girls would have to work full time just to pay for all that product because they would need it because their bodies would expect it.
No- and if you looked closely you would've seen a trickle of blood coming from the corner of my over sun exposed lips because I was biting my tongue in half! I'm really really really proud of myself.
For the last 20 years I have been researching natural alternatives to just about everything. Bill and I have made so many changes throughout our marriage to try to be as healthy as humanly possible and still be able to afford heat. We have had to give and take on some things (like cow's milk that they say is now hormone free), but other things we just truly believe in. I believe that most health problems extend from what we put in and on our bodies. There's more information on this (if you even care..) here and here and here and ideas for options here.
I use Dr. Bronner's soap everywhere, from my toes to my face. Then I use olive oil as a moisturizer and put it on with a special massage I learned about 15 years ago. That's my beauty routine, quick and easy and cheap!

Kristie,
Have you heard of or use Melaleuca products? Nick's family introduced me to them and if you have 30 min. some time (I don't even know how you have time to do such a great how busy your family life is!) I want to do a presentation for you about them. I am sure I have not done as extensive of research as you have, but I do think they are pretty great. Love, jess PS- we will definitely come camping in Indiana when Nick gets more than 1 day off from work!

LOL! I love that you mentioned mascara is made from bat poop. That is classic Kristie and I'm only sorry I missed it. I'd have loved to see the looks on the girls' faces. And I am proud that you bit your lip for the rest. I KNOW how hard that is for you.
